NLS win streak snapped

NEW LONDON -- Despite making 10 three-pointers, New London-Spicer had its eight-game winning streak snapped by Minnehaha Academy as the Redhawks had two players score over 20 points in a 83-69 non-conference win in boys basketball Thursday.

Minnehaha Academy, fourth in the Class AA poll, overcame a sluggish start to take a 46-38 lead at halftime.

Erik Tengwall, Chris Tobkin, Justin Zylstra and Jay Moten each hit a three-pointer early to allow NLS (15-6) to take a 12-6 lead. The Wildcats would eventually go up by eight, but Minnehaha Academy (21-2) would catch up and overtake NLS.

After trading baskets to open the second half, Moten got the Wildcats within five at 52-47 nearly five minutes into the half. But the Redhawks then went on an 8-0 run to stay in front by a comfortable margin.

Moten would finish with at team-high 18 points and Erik Tengwall followed with 14. They were the only two Wildcats to score in double figures while Greg Meyer had 25 points and Taylor Sparkman added 23 more for the Redhawks.
