NLS wrestler Stageberg wins Class AA's 113-pound state championship

Jakob Stageberg of NLS pulls free of Paul Fitterer of Cannon Falls 30 seconds into the third period earning the only point of the 113-pound championship match in Class AA.

New London-Spicer senior Jakob Stageberg captured the 113-pound Class AA title in a defensive standoff with Paul Fitterer of Cannon Falls in the State Wrestling Tournament at the Xcel Energy Center.

The two wrestlers were the only two undefeated at the start of the 16-wrestler bracket on Thursday.

There was no scoring through two frames and into the third where Stageberg stood up and pulled free for 1 escape point with a 1:30 left.

Stageberg (38-0) fended off a near takedown by the junior Fitterer (41-1) with seconds remaining at the edge of the mat to become the Wildcats first State champion in 11 years.
