No. 8 Alexandria edges Willmar girls hoops

ALEXANDRIA -- No. 8 Alexandria couldn't shake the determined visitors but in the end collected their ninth straight win on Friday, 53-51 over a tenacious Willmar team in Central Lakes girls basketball.

Lauren Trumm, a senior guard, broke away down court for a long inbound pass for an unopposed basket with just seconds left to secure the victory. Willmar's Kelley Fosso scored at the buzzer for the final two-point margi n.

Alex hasn't lost since opening night, an eight-point loss to Detroit Lakes. They're at the top of the league, along with Fergus Fall, with a 6-0 record and are now 9-1 overall.

"This was a good effort," said Willmar coach Brad Atchison. "I'm proud of them. It's a tough loss but you can't fault the way they played with so much energy and a lot olf tenacity."

Junior Heather Horning with 13 points, junior Anne Dunham with 11 and sophomore Fosso at 8 points led the Willmar scoring column. Dunham also collected 9 rebounds and Lindsey Atchsion made 4 assists and had 4 steals.

Willmar played good half-court defense but Trumm countered at the top of the Alex 1-3-1. She provoked 8 steals, some turned into easy breakaway lay-ins. She finished with 22 points on 10 field goals and two free throws. Sophomore guard Amanda Christianson came up with 15 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals. Whitney Gesell added 9 points and 7 rebounds.

Willmar dropped to 3-3 in the CLC and 5-6 overall.

Alexandria led 24-23 at intermission and got up by as much as 7 in the second half before Willmar charged back to keep it close.

Willmar has 3 homes games next week beginning with a rematch with Fergus Falls on Tuesday.
