GRANITE FALLS -- After expressing its exasperation with proposals to move the Yellow Medicine County Museum to a rural location, the County Board of Commissioners has voted against the most recent proposal.

The commissioners voted 4-1 not to consider the purchase of a property located near Prairie Edge's Casino near Granite Falls.

Commissioner Gary Johnson offered the motion against the purchase. He initially offered a proposal to stop all discussion about moving the museum for at least a year, but that proposal was seconded only by chairman Louis Sherlin, and triggered its own debate over proper procedure.

"I'm just tired of the chase around," Johnson said, regarding his frustration with the ongoing debate about where to move the museum.

The debate at Tuesday's meeting eventually boiled down to whether the commissioners supported moving the museum to a rural location. They expressed concern about security and operational costs for a facility outside of a municipality.

Commissioner Jane Remiger cast the lone vote against the motion to say no to the site most recently recommended by the Yellow Medicine County Historical Society. She noted that the Historical Society's board has devoted more than two years to its search for a new museum location.

Advocates want to remove the museum from its flood-vulnerable location along the Minnesota River in Granite Falls.
