Northwoods Baseball: Stingers knock off Huskies 6-4
DULUTH -- The Willmar Stingers scored three runs on one hit in the first inning and held the lead for the entire game, beating the Duluth Huskies 6-4 on Friday in Duluth.
Willmar improved to 17-13 and are in third place in the Northwoods League North Division. They return home for a game against Alexandria 7:05 p.m. today.
The Stingers took an early lead when Forrestt Allday and Mitch Rowan led off the game with back-to-back walks. Michael Suchy then walked with one out to load the bases, and Corben Green was hit by a pitch to drive in the first run.
Steven Brault came through with a single up the middle to score two more runs and give Willmar a 3-0 lead.
Duluth responded with two runs on four hits in the bottom of the inning, but the Stingers came right back with another run in the second on a Hunter Dozier sacrifice fly.
Willmar added an insurance run in the eighth when Dillon Haupt, in his first at bat as a Stinger, singled and later scored on an error, and another in the ninth when Michael Suchy scored from third on a double steal.
Kyle Fischer earned the win for the Stingers with six innings of two-run ball. He struck out six to push his team-leading total to 27. Fischer also leads the team with 29 innings pitched and has a 3.72 ERA on the season.
