Northwoods League: Benson leads Stingers over Alex
WILLMAR -- The Willmar Stingers rode a four-run third inning and beat the Alexandria Beetles 6-4 on Sunday at Bill Taunton Stadium.
Zach Benson hit a two-run triple to cap the four-run rally and Dillon Haupt hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning for his second shot in as many days.
Jerad McCrummen turned in another strong start, going six innings and allowing one earned run.
The Beetles led early, scoring runs in the first and third innings for a 2-0 advantage, but the Stingers went up in the bottom of the third when Mitch Rowan hit a one-out single.
Michael Suchy singled and stole second, and Rowan scored on an error by the catcher.
Suchy scored when Corben Green reached on another error, and after Haupt singled Benson cleared the bases with a triple.
Rowan, Suchy and Haupt each had two hits, and Benson was 3-for-4.
Willmar will begin a stretch of nine straight games on the road with a game 7:05 p.m today at Alexandria.
