Northwoods League: Stingers blow late lead in loss to Alex
ALEXANDRIA -- Andre Wheeler couldn't hold an eighth inning lead and the Alexandria Beetles rallied past the Willmar Stingers 5-4 on Monday in Alexandria.
The Beetles' rally came one inning after Willmar had taken its first lead of the game with a three-run seventh.
With the Stingers ahead 4-3, Wheeler loaded the bases with two walks and a base hit before allowing back-to-back RBI-singles to Tanner Vavra and Ben Moore.
The Stingers fell to 19-14 and are tied with the Waterloo Bucks for second place in the Northwoods League North Division. They are seven games behind the first-place Mankato MoonDogs.
Alexandria scored two in the first and one in the fifth to take an early 3-1 lead off Stinger starter Anthony Consiglio.
Willmar came back with three runs in the seventh on three walks, a hit batter and just one hit.
Michael Suchy had the hit, a single to drive in Forrestt Allday, and Zach Benson had an RBI-walk. Matt Jackson also scored in the inning on a wild pitch.
The Stingers' other run was on an RBI-single by Corben Green in the first inning.
Suchy and Green each had two hits for Willmar and Suchy raised his average to .360.
Wheeler took the loss, allowing two runs in 1-2/3 innings. Alexandria's Alex Guilford earned the win with 1-1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
