Northwoods League: Stingers crush Rox
ST. CLOUD -- The bottom half of the Willmar lineup came through as the No. 5-9 hitters combined for 11 hits and the Stingers beat the Rox 9-6 on Monday in St. Cloud.
The Stingers moved into a tie for third place in the Northwoods League North Division with an 11-9 record. They play 7:05 p.m. today at St. Cloud.
Catcher and No. 8-hitter J.D. Dorgan put the Stingers on the board in the second innings with an RBI-triple, his first of the year, to score two runs. Matt Jackson followed with a single to score Dorgan and the Stingers led 3-1.
St. Cloud tied it in the bottom of the inning, but Willmar came back to take a 5-3 in the third on a fielder's choice by Jackson and a Forrestt Allday RBI-single.
The Stingers tacked on four insurance runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth, which picked up a defense that made six errors leading to three unearned runs off Willmar starter Richie Navari.
Navari lasted 4-1/3 innings, giving way to Jacob Cage, who earned the win with 2-1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Dorgan was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Jackson had two hits and two RBIs.
Centerfielder Steven Brault had three hits, and Zach Benson and Corben Green each had two.
The No. 1-4 hitters for the Stingers combined for four hits. No. 3 batter Hunter Dozier was the only Willmar player to go hitless.
