Northwoods League: Stingers hit 3 HRs, but fall to Alex
ALEXANDRIA -- Kenny Roberts hit his league-leading 12th home run, but the Willmar Stingers fell to the Alexandria Beetles 9-7 on Wednesday in Alexandria.
The Stingers fell to 8-6 and are tied for second in the Northwoods League North Division second half. They play Alexandria at 7 p.m. today at Bill Taunton Stadium in Willmar.
Six Beetles batters had two hits to touch up Stingers' starting pitcher Mark Lukowski for four runs and relievers Kody Gorden and Jon Flinn for four more.
The big blow came in the sixth, when Alexandria's Matt Beaty hit an RBI-double. Beaty later scored on a sacrifice and an error, and a third run came in on a Tanner Vavra single.
The Stingers came back with two in the seventh on a two-run single from Michael Suchy, but that was as close as they would get.
Willmar got home runs from Mitch Rowan in the first, Dillon Haupt in the second and Roberts in the fourth.
Roberts and Haupt each had three hits, and Rowan was 2-for-5.
Michael Reed earned the win for the Beetles with one run allowed in two innings of relief.
