Norton Thomton Aug. 1, 1917 - Sept.1, 2009

WILLMAR -- Norton Thomton, 92, of Willmar died Tuesday at Bethesda Pleasant View in Willmar.

The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery in Montevideo. American Legion Post 167 of Willmar will provide military honors.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and for one hour before the service at the church.

He was born Aug. 1, 1917, in Montevideo to Emil and Julia (Lund) Thomton. He grew up in Montevideo and graduated from Montevideo High School in 1935. He worked for his parents in their grocery store and drove a grocery wholesale truck until enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1941. He served in North Africa and Europe, eventually ending in Ireland. In 1945, he was honorably discharged with numerous medals including a Silver Star with gold clusters. He returned to Montevideo and began working with Northwestern Bell Telephone.

He married Hazel Olsen on Jan. 19, 1946, in Montevideo. They lived in Montevideo for a short time before he was transferred to Willmar. He worked for Northwestern Bell for 36 years, retiring in 1981.

He was a member of American Legion Post 167, served on the honor guard for many years and served as the post commander. He was a member of Vinje Lutheran Church where he served as an usher.

He is survived by his sons: Ronald (and Carol) Thomton of Clara City and Mark Thomton of New London; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two brothers: Cleon Thomton of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Ralph Thomton of Litchfield.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 2003 and one sister.
