Norway Lake-Sunburg edges Atwater in wild finish
SUNBURG -- The only run of the game scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 11th inning giving Norway Lake-Sunburg a 1-0 win over Atwater to open the season for both teams at Willie Reigstad Field.
Justin Johnson crossed the plate to end the game. He had reached on in infield error, advanced to second on a groundout and to third on a single by Dan Leritz.
That ended four strong innings of relief by Jeremy Elkjer (two hits, one walk). Brian Kingery came in from shortstop to pitch.
Chris Braaten was hit by a pitch to load the bases and the next batter struck out for the second out. But with Kent Gjerde at the plate, a pitch went to the backstop and Johnson hustled home.
The win went to Erik Ellingboe, who pitched both extra innings after catching Braaten for the first nine scoreless frames. Braaten allowed six hits, walked two and fanned 10.
Both teams saw threats doused by double plays, including a chance for the Chuckers in the top of the 11th. And both teams had a runner thrown out at the plate in the fifth.
Zach Cunningham, Justin Schroeder and Vance Martin had two hits each for Atwater.
Atwater starter Michael Malvin didn't allow a hit through four innings. He left for Elkjer in the seventh. The Lakers managed six hits, all singles.
