WILLMAR -- The Renville County West School District is working on selling its building in Sacred Heart and has even advertised it on eBay.

Superintendent Lance Bagstad provided an update to the School Board Monday.

"We've had 2,744 views," he said of the school's eBay posting, and 67 people have put it on their watch lists.

Bagstad the district is anxious to sell the building but is also being cautious about its buyers.

"I have fielded e-mails from all over the country," he said. "People have wonderful, innovative, creative ideas."

One potential buyer from another state is discussing a possible sale with school officials, Bagstad said. That person may be visiting the site soon.

He's also gotten calls from training centers in the Twin Cities and from people who operate assisted living facilities. "I'm absolutely amazed we've been able to reach out," he said.

Bagstad said the hope is that the district can sell the building to someone who will allow some continued school use for extra-curricular activities.

Some buyers are particularly interested in the portion of the building built in 1901, Bagstad said.

Information about the building is available on the district's Web site,

The building closed a year ago when the district moved all its students into the building in Renville.

The 80,000-square-foot building is located on 4.68 acres in the city of Sacred Heart and is wired for technology. The district will have an auction of old and unused equipment from the building on June 24 at the Sacred Heart School, Bagstad said. The auction is expected to include some antique school equipment.

Bagstad said the district's greenhouse, operated by the Future Farmers of America chapter, is set to open on Monday. The chapter has operated the greenhouse each spring for the past two years.

The School Board gave instructor Darrel Refsland the go-ahead to till a 50-x-50 plot next to the greenhouse to develop an outdoor garden, too.

Superintendent Lance Bagstad said children in grades K-12 will work on the garden plot.

The plan is to include plants uncommon to the area and have all students take part in the gardening project in some way, he said.

Eventually, it could become a community garden, Bagstad said.

The greenhouse is located along Highway 212 in Renville, at the far south end of the school's land.

Bagstad said he attended a meeting of area superintendents last week. The group, organized by Willmar Superintendent Jerry Kjergaard, is discussing ways school districts can work together.

The group also plans listening sessions in area communities.

"I'm excited to have these conversations about improving instruction in our area," he said. "In the long run, I think it's going to make all of our districts stronger and better."
