Twenty-three-year-old Terence Tyler was discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps. in 2010. The military says he never served overseas and would not say whether he was discharged honorably.

A law-enforcement official briefed on the case confirmed that Tyler was the shooter who opened fire in military clothing at the Pathmark store early Friday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because his agency is not in charge of the investigation.

While in the service, Tyler was an infantryman. His home of record was in Brooklyn.
