Old County Road 9 renamed near Eagle Lake
WILLMAR — For decades, the narrow, two-lane road that hugs the east side of Eagle Lake near Willmar has been called Kandiyohi County Road 9.
With a major road project in the area that resulted in the construction of a new segment of County Road 9 that crosses farm fields far away from the lake, road names needed to be changed.
At their meeting Tuesday, the Kandiyohi County Commissioners agreed that the old County Road 9 will be known as East Eagle Lake Road.
The name was the preferred choice of residents in the area, said County Public Works Director Gary Danielson.
The name will be on the street signs and residents will eventually need to change their mailing addresses to reflect the new name.
For county record-keeping, however, Danielson said old County Road 9 will be known internally as County Road 209.
That part of the road will eventually be turned back to the township.
The County Road 9 system was initially built as a state trunk highway before U.S. Highway 71 was built, said Danielson.
Back then the road was known as State Highway 4.
