BUFFALO LAKE -- Oliver Alvin Schafer, 93, of Buffalo Lake, died Friday at the Golden Living Center in Olivia.
The service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Zion United Methodist Church in Buffalo Lake.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church and one hour before the service Wednesday. Hughes Funeral Home of Hector is handling arrangements.
He was born Sept. 25, 1915, in Sherburn to John and Dora (Finke) Schafer. He grew up in Buffalo Lake and graduated from Buffalo Lake High School.
He married Harriet Oehler on Jan. 31, 1935, in Buffalo Lake. They lived on the Schafer family farm and farmed. They moved to Buffalo Lake in 1978. Harriet died in July 2007, and Oliver eventually moved into the Golden Living Center in Olivia.
He was president of the Buffalo Lake Community Fund Organization for 38 years. He was one of the first members of 4-H and became a 4-H leader. He was active with the Lake Allie Park Association and served on the High Island Watershed Board and the Buffalo Lake Clinic Board. He was a member and served as president for many years of the Rod and Gun Club. He was a member of Zion United Methodist Church and taught Sunday School for many years.
He is survived by his children: James Schafer of Buffalo Lake, Kay (and Thomas) Sorenson of Defiance, Mo., Ruthann Giraud of Urbandale, Iowa, and Julie (and Rodney) Johnson of Two Harbors; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister: Pearl (and Wesley) Vath of Buffalo Lake.
He was preceded in death by his wife; one daughter-in-law: Marilyn Schafer; one son-in-law: Doug Giraud; and seven siblings.
