WILLMAR -- Orville T. Gjerde, 86, of Willmar died Wednesday at Rice Care Center in Willmar.
The service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be in Cloverleaf Cemetery in Willmar.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar and for one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to the dialysis program at Rice Memorial Hospital or Calvary Lutheran Church.
He was born Nov. 10, 1922, in Green Lake Township near Spicer to Oliver and Mabel (Thompson) Gjerde. He attended rural school in Green Lake Township. Following his education, he helped his father on the family farm.
He married Alice Gilbertson on May 17, 1945. They lived in Willmar. He went to work for the Great Northern Railroad where he worked 38 years as a fireman and engineer, retiring in 1983.
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Elks Club and the Burlington Northern Fireman and Engineers. In his retirement years, he was a member of the Goats and the Willmar Senior Citizens Center.
He is survived by his wife; daughters: Cheri (and David) Duininck of Willmar and Marilyn Gjerde of St. Paul; two grandchildren; a great-grandson; siblings: Harlan (and LaVonne) Gjerde of St. Paul, Mylo (and Barbara) Gjerde of Spicer and Eleanor (and Walter) Swanson of North Carolina.
