WILLMAR -- Willmar Municipal Utilities will install barricades today to permanently close several blocks of Pacific Avenue Southwest.

Pacific Avenue will be closed between Seventh and 10th streets. Eighth Street Southwest will also be closed between Benson and Pacific avenues.

The utility has been discussing the closure for more than a year.

The City Council gave it final approval last week.

Pacific Avenue is the street that runs east and west between the utility's power plant and BNSF Railway tracks.

The closure will allow construction of a coal storage facility that is part of a $10 million power plant improvement project.

Utility officials have said the street closing would also provide a safer working situation for employees.
