According to a news release from Stearns County Sheriff John Sanner, deputies responded to a personal injury accident at County Road 34 and Highland Drive, just east of Paynesville and found that Brooks Gunderson, the man who was later arrested, was driving a 2009 Ford van east on County Road 34 and attempted to make a left turn in front of a 1989 Jeep driven by Shawn Klaphake.

Klaphake was injured in the collision and Gunderson left the scene of the crash. Klaphake was taken to Paynesville Hospital and then sent to St. Cloud Hospital for his injuries. A witness identified Gunderson as the driver of the van and deputies found Gunderson at his residence, attempting to conceal the van in his garage. The garage was not designed to accommodate the larger van and was damaged in the process.

Gunderson fled into his residence and was pursued and arrested inside the house. He was taken to the Stearns County Jail. Also responding were the Paynesville Fire Department and the State Patrol.
