Permits granted for two gravel pits in Lake Andrew Township
WILLMAR -- Conditional use permits were approved Monday for two gravel pits in Lake Andrew Township.
The action was taken by the Kandiyohi County Planning Commission.
The Kandiyohi County Board of Commissioners will take final action on the permits at its meeting on May 16.
Environmental assessment worksheets had been prepared for both gravel pits.
Earlier this month the Kandiyohi County Commissioners agreed the environmental review adequately showed the mining operations would not cause environmental harm and said a more in-depth environmental impact statement was not necessary.
Vreeman Construction is seeking the permit to mine gravel, operate a bituminous hot mix plant and recycle concrete and bituminous products on two parcels of land currently owned by Prentice Trucking & Excavating.
One 20-acre parcel is located on U.S. Highway 71. A 35-acre parcel is located in the Lake Florida area. Both are in general agricultural districts.
According to meeting minutes, the 10-year permits will allow operations between the hours of 6 a.m. and 8 p.m.
A 100-foot setback from a wetland in the 35-acre site was set as one of the conditions to the permit.
Meanwhile, approval was given to allow Jay Morrell Building Investment LLC to operate an existing gravel wash plant 24 hours a day, Monday through Saturday, from March 1 through Nov. 30. The facility is located in a general agricultural district in Roseville Township. The company did not request a change in hours of operation for the existing crushing operation.
The Planning Commission on Monday also approved a conditional use permit for Melvin and Michael Bulthuis for a confinement hog barn in Holland Township that will accommodate 3,150 head of swine, or 682.5 animal units. The barn will include an eight-foot-deep concrete pit for manure storage.
A permit was also approved for construction of a 22,168-square-foot office area and a 52,288-square-foot garage and warehouse for the Kandiyohi Power Cooperative in the Touchstone Business Center in Green Lake Township.
The Planning Commission also approved the final plat for Westrich First Addition in Dovre Township.
