WALKER, Minn. — A Pine River man was sentenced to 40 years in prison Thursday for a 2012 killing in which the body was later dismembered and burned.

Dane Joseph Riley, 29, was sentenced in Cass County court on Thursday. In December, he was convicted on charges of second-degree intentional murder, interference with a dead body and ineligible person in possession of a firearm.

The Cass County attorney’s office reported that the jury also found aggravating factors that warranted a sentence longer than suggested by Minnesota guidelines.

Riley burned and dismembered  the body of Mark Huesmann, 27, before burying him in July 2012, according to a Cass County Attorney’s Office press release.

After Huesmann was reported missing, an investigation led to Riley.

Pieces of Huesmann’s clothing were discovered in a burn pit on Riley’s property and Huesmann’s remains were found buried in the vicinity of Riley’s house in rural Pine River.

A witness told officers she had heard two gunshots in the early morning hours of July 14, 2012, and observed Riley beating Husemann, according to the release.
