If you are oblivious to who the progressive rock band Pink Floyd is, you probably know very little about 1970s rock and roll. The1973 album "Dark Side of the Moon" by this British experimental, psychedelic band remained in the charts for 741 weeks from 1973 to 1988, longer than any other album in history. Pink Floyd has been known for their atmospheric soundscapes which combine rock with jazz fusion and blues guitar.

On Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 p.m. a group of 12 local musicians are presenting the closest thing that a Willmar audience will ever hear to a live performance of Pink Floyd. During a show they are calling "Return of the Dark Side of the Room." The concert will be presented at the WEAC Auditorium and will feature the entire "Dark Side of the Moon" album as well as nine other songs from Pink Floyd's extensive songbook.

This is similar to the way a performance by an orchestra playing the music of Beethoven a tribute-band allows people to perceive well-known music being performed live, only this time it is classic-rock instead of classical.

Fans of Pink Floyd are super familiar with the group's music which creates an enormous challenge for the tribute-band because the elimination of any sax solos or back-up vocals or sonic sound effect would be immediately missed. But this musical group is well up to the undertaking having performed a similar show last year at The Barn Theatre to a very satisfied crowd. Having been inspired by recently seeing Roger Waters' show of "The Wall," group organizer Wendell Nash felt they needed to move their show to a bigger venue so they could play it much louder than they had in the past.

Musicians in the local Pink Floyd Tribute Band include the talents of: Ron Hagemeyer, Shannon Haglund, Bill Ahl, Wendell Nash, Dom Nash, Sara Miller, Alina Johnson, Laura Brown, Greg Hayhurst, Steve Mahlum, Carl Holm and Jesse Nash.

Tickets for the Pink Floyd Tribute Band concert are $15 in advance at Fat Freddy's and Whitney Music in Willmar or $18 at the door.
