NEW LONDON — The West Central Broncos ground train doesn’t seem to be stopping any time soon.

The Broncos used their brutal rushing attack to produce 307 yards on the ground and beat the Minnesota Silverbacks 28-16 Saturday evening at New London-Spicer High School.

The Broncos, winners of four straight, got off to a torrid start, scoring twice in the opening quarter. Tarrell McDuffie capped the Broncos’ opening drive with a 15-yard touchdown scamper, and quarterback Ben Sletta had a 19-yard touchdown carry of his own.

The Silverbacks fought back in the second quarter, however, scoring a touchdown and adding a two-point conversion. Later in the quarter, the Broncos turned defense into offense. Matt Lewis was able to recover a Silverback fumble in the end zone to extend the Broncos’ lead to 20-8 at halftime.

The Broncos came out of the locker room and picked up where they left off: running all over the Silverback defense.

McDuffie once again entered the end zone, this time from 16 yards out.

Later in the third quarter, the Broncos’ defense produced a safety to help put the game out of reach.

The Silverbacks tacked on a score in the fourth to make the 28-16 result a respectable one.

Joel Bauman and McDuffie lead the offensive charge with over 100 rushing yards apiece. Sletta also provided 39 yards rushing.

The Broncos pass rushers relentlessly pressured the Silverbacks all night, leading to an outstanding seven sacks. Kyle Weinandt and Eric Johnson each had a pair of sacks. Patricio Lopez produced two points with a safety.

The Broncos take a four-game winning streak into the MPFL playoffs. “We are a first-year team with the playoffs approaching. I am extremely proud of these men” said Broncos coach Willie Holmes.

The Broncos will host the Midwest Nightmare at 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 13 back at Pederson Field in New London in the opening round of the league playoffs.
