Plows are pulled in Renville County

OLIVIA - Near white-out conditions in Renville County have kept the snow plows off the roads today.

"They can't see anything out there at all," said Kevin Sing, Renville County highway superintendent. "It's pretty tough going right now."

When high winds and snow hit the area early this morning Sing said the decision was made not to send the plows at all. "It wouldn't have done any good," he said.

Besides fighting a no-win battle with snow drifts that quickly fill in, Sing said plows would've simply created another traffic hazard.

Visibility is bad in open rural areas and in town.

While looking out the window during a telephone interview from the shop in Olivia, Sing said he couldn't even see the salt shed about a half- block away.

Unless the winds die down yet today, Sing said the plows likely won't be out until 5 a.m. Tuesday.
