Police arrest Willmar man involved in standoff
Willmar Minnesota 2208 Trott Ave. SW / P.O. Box 839 56201

Willmar Police said this morning that 42-year-old David Wayne Chambers of Willmar was arrested on assault and terroristic threat charges in connection with a five-hour standoff Thursday night at his residence in the 1400 block of 13th Avenue Northeast.

The standoff began after police officers responded to a 911 call at 6:52 p.m. of a man with a gun threatening to kill himself and threatening to kill any law enforcement officer who came to his residence. Officers attempted to talk the man out of his residence or to give up the weapon but were unable to do so.

The Willmar Emergency Response Team with assistance from the Kandiyohi County SWAT team evacuated three residences in and near the structure and continued to negotiate with the man.

At one point, the man came out of the residence with a gun and made direct threats to officers who were on the security perimeter, said Police Sgt. Michael Markkanen.

Tactical team members made entry into the residence at approximately 11:55 p.m. and arrested Chambers. Markkanen said less than lethal force was used in making the arrest. Chambers is being held in the Kandiyohi County Jail pending his first court appearance, said Markkanen.

He said the extreme cold weather and wind chill were major factors for the safety of law enforcement officers on the scene, making officers rotate in and out of the cold weather to stay warm. One police officer suffered frostbite, requiring medical attention.

Assisting in the case were the Minnesota State Patrol, Kandiyohi Tactical Medical Team, Willmar Ambulance and the Willmar Fire Department.
