WILLMAR — A Willmar police officer was assaulted and injured Thursday afternoon during a routine traffic stop.

The officer was taken to Rice Memorial Hospital by ambulance and later released, according to a news release from Police Chief David Wyffels.

Douglas Robert Blom, 55, of Willmar, was taken into custody and faces charges of fourth degree assault and speeding, according to the release.

The officer met a vehicle traveling south on 15th Avenue Southwest at a high speed. The officer turned around and caught up with the vehicle as it was turning west on Minnesota Avenue.

The vehicle stopped and the officer approached it. The driver assaulted the officer who used a Taser and chemical spray but could not subdue him.

The officer called for assistance and officers from Willmar Police, the Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office and the State Patrol responded, according to the release.

As he was being transported to Kandiyohi County jail, Blom complained of soreness from skin abrasions and chemical spray exposure. He was taken to Rice Hospital for examination.
