In Kandiyohi County, the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, the Republican Party and the Independence Party will hold precinct caucuses.

All the Kandiyohi caucuses begin at 7 p.m. at various locations in the county.

Those locations are listed in the accompanying sidebar.

Individuals who are unsure of which precinct they live in can find the information online at: http://pollfinder.sos.state.mn.us/ and entering your zip code and address.

Participants are encouraged to arrive at their respective caucuses ahead of the 7 p.m. start time early to complete registration prior to the start of the meetings.

According to the Minnesota Secretary of State website, precinct caucuses are meetings organized by Minnesota’s political parties that signal the first step for the party to select candidates and choose the party’s goals and values.

Precinct caucuses are open to the public.

However, in order to vote, offer resolutions or become a delegate participants must

- Be eligible to vote in the fall election;

- Live in the precinct;

- Be in general agreement with the principles of the political party (Minnesota does not have an official party registration process).

During caucuses, precinct officers are elected to organize political activities in the precinct.

Participants also typically discuss issues, ideas and resolutions for the party to support.

Straw poll votes may also be held to show voter preference for candidates for governor or president.

Delegates are also elected to represent your precinct at upcoming political conventions that are held during an election year, including the political party’s county or district conventions.

At these conventions, delegates endorse candidates to represent the county or district, and then choose a smaller number of delegates for the party’s congressional and state conventions, according to the Secretary of State’s website.

These delegates will endorse candidates to represent the congressional district or statewide offices such as governor or U.S. Senator.
