Prep baseball: BOLD earns state tourney berth with win over W-E-M
MANKATO — It took a comeback late in the game but the BOLD baseball team is headed back to the Class A state tournament.
Tyler Rock’s three-run triple in the Warriors’ four-run fifth inning was the killing blow in a 6-2 win over Waterville-Elysian-Morristown on Thursday in the Section 2A title game at Franklin Rogers Park.
The Warriors (15-6) open the state tournament next Thursday at the Mini Met in Jordan. The tournament games are seeded so BOLD’s opponent has not yet been determined.
Nolan Grose’s run-scoring triple and a BOLD error gave W-E-M a 2-0 lead in the first inning, and Grose was doing a good job keeping Warriors stranded on the base paths, allowing just a run in the second despite walking seven and hitting two batters in just 4.2 innings. BOLD left 12 runners on base.
But after the first, BOLD pitcher Riley Kramer was solid, following up a no-hitter in his last start by scattering eight hits and working six shutout innings.
After Rock’s big hit in the fifth, the Warriors, who went 5-0 in the section tournament as the North sub-section’s No. 3 seed, tacked on an insurance run in the sixth.
Rock was 2-for-4 and Austin Weis, who singled in BOLD’s first run, had three RBIs and scored a run. Trevor Nissen was 1-for-3 and scored twice and Tyler Seehusen and Logan Sandgren also had hits and scored runs.
