BIRD ISLAND — The BOLD baseball team intended to use the regular season as a launching pad into the playoffs, possibly taking a few lumps at times with the goal of being in top form come the postseason.

The Warriors appear to be working that plan to a tee, allowing just five hits in two games and taking down Sauk Centre and MACCRAY on Saturday, both by 10-0 scores in five-inning games.

BOLD’s Trevor Nissen pitched all five innings against Sauk Centre, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out three.

Nissen also had two hits and drove in two runs, and Lane Stadther and Max Buchtel both drove in three runs.

Against MACCRAY, Austin Weis and Ben Steffel combined on a three-hitter, and Steffel was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Riley Kramer and Buchtel both drove in two runs and scored twice, and Nissen, Stadther, Trent Athmann and Sandgren all had RBIs.

Josh Mackedanz scattered three hits and the Bulldogs edged the Tigers in a West Central Conference game Saturday in Roscoe.

Mackedanz allowed just an unearned run in the first while striking out seven. Blake Karsch doubled and drove in a run.

Gage Bachman was 2-for-3 for the Tigers.

Paynesville improved to 10-1 in the conference and 12-4 overall. The Bulldogs play BOLD at Roscoe at 5 p.m. Tuesday and need a win to tie for the West Central South championship.

Lucas Nordmeyer doubled in the winning run after Trey Austvold singled to tie the game in the seventh inning Saturday in a non-conference game in Benson.

Nordmeyer also got the win, working a complete game and allowing two runs.

Nordmeyer was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI and Austvold had two hits and the game-tying RBI.

The Braves’ Tanner Mikkelson and Aaron Ahrndt both had two hits and Connor Staton took a tough loss, working seven innings and allowing one earned run while striking out four.

The Braves play at Morris/Chokio-Alberta at 3:30 p.m. today, then host Yellow Medicine East for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

The Jaguars took two games from the Lakers in the Max Bat Invitational in Elrosa, a tournament in which the teams played with wood bats.

Brian Goodwin stymied the Lakers, working seven innings and allowing just two hits and a walk while striking out four.

Justin Schmitz drove in Goodwin with the game’s only run in the third inning.

Jayden Beecher and Brian Gruber pitched strong in the loss, allowing six hits, three walks and striking out five.

Jordan Wosmek threw well in five relief innings, allowing just one hit and a walk while striking out eight to lead the Jaguars to a second win over the Lakers.

Goodwin was 3-for-4 with an RBI and James Kuefler and James Boogaard both had two hits. Cole Arceneau drove in two runs and Dalon Bitzan also had an RBI.

Austin VerSteeg was 2-for-3 and drove in a run for the Lakers.

Browerville’s Austin Duncan and Tanner Stepaniak combined to one-hit Lac qui Parle Valley in the opening game of the Canby wood bat tournament on Saturday.

Jon Nielsen’s infield roller was the only Eagles hit. Duncan walked five in 5.1 innings and Stepaniak got the win in relief.

Noah Iten doubled and scored on Jackson Wollenburg’s single in the sixth.

Austin Domeier pitched well, allowing four hits while striking out three in six innings.

Browerville went on to down Canby 10-2 in the tournament championship game.

LQPV is 14-5 overall and plays next against New London-Spicer at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Green Lake Diamond in Spicer.

Montevideo had the potential winning run gunned down at the plate in the eighth inning and Pipestone notched the winning run in the 11th, spoiling a stellar effort by reliever Ricky Schmitz.

Schmitz took the loss despite striking out 10 and allowing just one earned run in 5.1 innings of relief.

Austin Hiepler was 3-for-6 with two doubles and an RBI, and Schmitz was 3-for-5 and drove in a pair of runs. Jeff Rohloff also had three hits and Markus Kranz tripled in two runs.

The Thunder Hawks are 8-4 in the West Central Conference and 11-6 overall. They play at Sauk Centre at 4 p.m. today.

Eddie Estrada was 2-for-3 and blasted a solo home run to straightaway center field in the sixth, and was left on deck with the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh in Litchfield’s loss.
