Prep Baseball: Comeback Cardinals sink Rocori
WILLMAR -- The Willmar Cardinals finally had some breaks go their way and the result was an unlikely seventh inning and a 7-6 victory over the Rocori Spartans on Tuesday.
Down 6-2 with one out in the sevneth, the Cardinals parlayed four singles and three Rocori errors into a five-run inning and their second win over the defending Class AA champions in 24 hours.
"It was ugly, but we'll take it," said Willmar coach Mark Stier. "We battled, though, in the seventh getting those four hits."
Willmar (3-6, 3-10) survived eight errors of its own.
Gabe Amon, who looked like the certain loser after the visitors cushioned their lead with two more runs in the top of the seventh, went home with his second win of the season. He allowed eight hits, but only two earned runs.Natthanial Swoyer, pinch-hitter Tim Rogers Jake Rambow and Dean Stier supplied singles in the last inning.
But it was three consecutive infield errors by the Spartans (6-6, 8-7) that avoided lights out.
On the second, a throwing error by the shortstop, Stier scored from second with the tying run. Pinch-runner Daniel Stadem came around third and was heading home.
It appeared the first baseman's throw would nail Stadem easily. But the ball bounced off the catcher's chest and when he reached to pick it up, he fumbled the ball twice, allowing Stadem to reach home safely to cap a wild finish.
