Prep Baseball: Delano rocks Paynesville in 5AA loser’s bracket final
DELANO — Any loss that ends a baseball team’s season is tough to take. This one will be even a little more depressing for the Paynesville Bulldogs.
Delano came out swinging and never relented, downing the Bulldogs 18-0 in five innings in a Section 5AA elimination game on Tuesday.
The Bulldogs managed just two hits while Delano scored multiple runs in three of the five innings, pounding out 14 hits.
“We didn’t play that badly, but they hit the heck out of the ball,” said Bulldogs head coach Brad Skoglund. “They really took us behind the woodshed. We couldn’t get them out.”
Toby Hanson and Brett Norling both hit home runs and Christian Triplett had two hits and drove in a pair of runs.
Tyler Hannan allowed singles by Nathan Stang and Josh Mackedanz to get the win. Hannan stuck out only one, but only issued one walk.
The Bulldogs finished 16-8 while Delano now plays Litchfield on Thursday for the section title. Delano must beat the Dragons twice to advance to next week’s Class AA State Tournament in St. Cloud.
“This was a disappointing loss,” Skoglund said. “We needed a good start but they just beat us up a bit; Delano’s a really good team. But we had a good season and I’m really proud of the kids.”
