HANCOCK — The Hancock bullpen squandered a six-run lead, but a clutch two-out hit from Owls’ freshman Zach Copa lifted Hancock over Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg 10-7 on Monday in a non-conference game.

The Hancock offense was strong early, scoring in every inning but the first to build a 6-0 lead behind five shutout innings from Collin Brown.

But KMS batted around and then some in the top of the sixth, sending 13 players to the plate in a seven-run inning to go up 7-6 on a two-run double from Fred Mansfield and two-run singles from Travis Lamecker and Aaron Collins.

Hancock responded with a leadoff single from Philip Schaefer in the bottom half of the inning. Schaefer came around to score and tie the game on a single and an error.

KMS then recorded two outs, bringing Copa to the plate, who knocked a two-run base hit to put Hancock up 9-7.

Brown went five innings and struck out six in a no-decision, and Justin Miller picked up the win with 1.2 innings of relief.

Brandon Dahl was the hard-luck loser, allowing four unearned runs in an inning of work.

KMS starter Rylan Hatlestad fanned seven and walked none in three innings.

Taylor Holleman was 3-for-4 with a double, triple, and two RBIs, and Schaefer and Miller each had two hits.

The Owls (2-1) next play today at West Central Area, and KMS hosts Minneota on Thursday.
