Prep Baseball: Paynesville staves off elimination in 6AA
ST. CLOUD -- Jason Kampsen scampered home from third with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh as Paynesville stayed alive with a thrilling 2-1 win over Little Falls on Monday in Section 6AA baseball.
Kampsen, who led off the seventh inning with his third hit of the game, beat the throw to home from the Flyers' second baseman after a diving stop to glove Aaron Lund's bases-loaded ground ball.
The Bulldogs (16-8) play again today in the loser's bracket final against St. Cloud Cathedral at 7 p.m. at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud.
Winning pitcher Aaron Savelkoul threw a five-hitter with one walk and two strikeouts. He also tripled and scored on Kampsen's single in the fourth inning for the game's first run.
The Flyers knotted the score 1-1 with a run in the top of the seventh inning on a Mitch Dorn single that scored Josh Wentzel with two outs.
In last of the seventh, Jordan Lieser bunted Kampsen to second. Anthony Poepping was intentionally walked, but that move backfired when Riley Kampsen drew a non-intentional walk off Flyers' starter and loser Mitch Dorn.
Lund's grounder was all it took to get Kampsen home.
Dorn also tossed a five-hitter with three strikeouts and those two walks.
