PAYNESVILLE -- Nathan Nietfeld of Paynesville held Benson to three hits en route to a 6-1 win in the first round of the Section 6A baseball tournament Thursday.

Nietfeld allowed one run, struck out five and walked one for the Bulldogs (16-4), who will play the winner of the Melrose-Sauk Centre game at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Cold Spring.

Nietfeld also hit an RBI double. Jordan Lieser led the team with two hits and drove in one run. Jake Deadrick also doubled.

Kyle Peterson provided the only run for Benson with a solo home run in the seventh.

Jed Eix, who also was the starting pitcher for Benson (2-18), and Carter Fennell collected the other hits.

The teams combined for 26 hits and 16 players had at least one hit.

The Wildcats (10-11) overcame a 5-1 deficit in the fourth with eight runs, highlighted by a three-run home run from Jack Hartley and a two-run triple by Luke Peterson.

NLS expanded its lead to 12-5 with three runs in the fifth.

The Lakers (9-13) made a late run with six runs in the seventh. Aaron Giese hit his second double of the game to drive in a run, Mike Whittemore smacked a two-run double and Alex Henricks had a two-run single.

The Wildcats will play the winner of the Staples-Motley vs. Long Prairie-Grey Eagle game at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Cold Spring.
