Prep baseball roundup: Willmar can’t snare Otters

WILLMAR — The Willmar Cardinals outhit visiting Fergus Falls 8 to 2 but fell 5-3.

How does that happen? Try four Willmar errors while the Otters were flawless in the field.

The visitors scored three times in the top of the second at Baker Field aided by two Willmar errors and a couple of wild pitches by Cole Christensen.

Other than that disaster, Christensen blanked the Otters over four innings though he hit three batters and walked a pair.

Willmar couldn’t string anything together until the sixth when Tony McCleary doubled leading off, Christensen stroked an RBI single and Buzzy Tollefson came up with a clutch RBI double in his second at bat after taking over for Evan Van DenEinde behind the plate.

Fergus reliever Cody Breen pitched a scoreless seventh for the win.

Junior left fielder Brett Swanson had a pair of hits batting in the nine spot. McCleary also supplied a pair of hits.

“I’m proud of the guys,” said coach Mark Stier, though disappointed with the outcome. “We showed that we are gamers and have made progress. We hit well and pitched well; now we have to cut down on mistakes.”

Josh Warne threw the last three innings allowing 1 hit and 2 runs, 1 earned.

Willmar is at Sauk Rapids 5 p.m. Monday.
