WACONIA — Shakopee banged out 16 hits and took advantage of six Willmar errors, and the Sabers took a 12-3 win to eliminate the Cardinals from the first round of the Section 2AAA tournament on Friday.
The Cardinals plated three early runs for a 3-1 lead in the second inning, but couldn’t hold off the Shakopee bats, led by three-hit performances from Jacob Rhinesmith and Dominick Schleper.
The Sabers tagged starting pitcher Adam Nibaur for 10 runs, five of which were earned.
Nibaur struck out three in 4.2 innings of work, and Brandon Wedel finished up the game, allowing the final two runs.
Tony McCleary got the Cardinals’ biggest hit, a two-run double in the second inning. Cole Hagen followed with a single to score McCleary.
Josh Tinklenberg and Cole Christenson each had two hits.
The Cardinals finish their season with a 4-14 record.
