Prep Baseball: SC Tech nips Willmar in 7th
WILLMAR -- The Willmar Cardinals lost their regular-season finale on Tuesday.
Less than 24 hours after winning a 3-2 nail-biter against New London-Spicer, the Cardinals (10-9) were shaded by Central Lakes Conference foe St. Cloud Tech, 4-3.
Kellan Euerle's wind-aided homer to left field leading off the seventh inning broke a 3-3-tie.
Matt Odom singled off Tech reliever Tom Korf to open Willmar's half of the seventh, but two force outs and a strike out followed.
Jordan Smith was touched for 10 hits in absorbing the loss. He struck out 11.
While it wasn't scored as an error, a fielding miscue in the top of the sixth was crucial.
With two on and two out, Tiger pinch hitter Nick Peterson popped up for the likely third out. But no one took charge and the ball fell safely in the middle of the infield, allowing Casey Ahrendt, who had singled, to score the tying run.
Willmar scored one in the third when Smith doubled home Logan Birkland.
In the fifth, Odom scored on bases-loaded ground out and Smith, who had been walked intentionally, stole home for a 3-2 Willmar lead. It was one off six stolen bases by Willmar.
Willmar (8-6, 10-9) opens section play on Friday in Prior Lake.
