Prep Baseball: Willmar sweeps St. Cloud Apollo

WILLMAR -- Gabe Amon pitched a one-hitter as Willmar routed St. Cloud Apollo 10-0 in the first game, then Derrick Loiselle hit a two-run single with two outs in the top of the eighth in the second game as the Cardinals completed a Central Lakes Conference baseball sweep with a 6-4 victory on Wednesday.

Amon was never in trouble in his five-inning shutout. He walked two and struck out two. The Eagles only advanced a runner as far as second base once in the game, that coming in the fourth inning on an error and a walk. The lone hit the left-hander allowed came in the second inning when Kyle Weyrauch singled with two outs.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals (3-9, 5-12) rapped nine hits, including two each by Austin Adamson and Jake Damhof. Adamson and Ryan Lawler drove in two runs apiece.

Lawler's single in the bottom of the fifth inning brought in the Cardinal run that invoked the 10-run rule.

In the second game, Nathanial Swoyer gave up four unearned runs in the opening inning after getting the first two batters out, then settled down and blanked the Eagles (4-8, 4-11) over the next seven innings. He finished with a five-hitter with six walks and six strikeouts. Three of the hits off him came in the first frame, which also included three errors.

Dean Stier had two of Willmar's seven hits and drove in two runs. Andrew Bangen and Jake Rambow also drove in runs.

St. Cloud Apollo was missing some players due to an athletic banquet.

Willmar hosts Alexandria in another Central Lakes Conference tilt today. Willmar closes the regular season with four home games.
