BAXTER — Willmar teams ran strong at the Central Lakes Conference meet hosted by Brainerd on Tuesday. Cardinal teams won four of the six races plush had a runner-up and a third-place.


The Willmar girls were far out front with 34 points to runner-up Sartell with 62.

The boys fell by one point to Alexandria 50-51.  Tom Seifert (16:28) finished first in the 5k with Nadir Yusuf in fourth at 16:42.

Samantha Hanson in third and Sophie Schmitz in fourth led five Willmar runners in the first 11 to the chute.

The Willmar teams each finished first last year with Sartell the runner-up in each division. Seifert finished third last fall in his race while Samantha Hanson took fourth.

The Willmar boys have finished no lower than second in every CLC final beginning in 2004.

Seifert didn’t have a lot to spar at the finish line. Connor Danielson of Fergus Falls was just 1.40 back in second place.

The Hasz twins of third-place Alexandria,  finished far out front in the girls 4k — Megan in 13:52 and Bethany in 13:53. Hanson’s third-place time was 14:53.

The Alex boys placed their five counters from 6th to 15th place. Finishing out Willmar’s top five were Sam Anez (11th), Ian Thompson (17th) and Austin Miley (18th).

After Hanson and Schmitz in the 4k for Willmar came Jess Hanson (6th) and then in stride together Kayla Rudie (10th) and Serena Monson (11th). Hanson is a junior and Monson a 7th-grader; the other three girls are freshmen.

Willmar teams dominated the throughout the meet: the JV boys, with Tyler Gonzalez first, posted a perfect score of 15; the JV girls were also first taking the top 3 medals with Courtney Hanson the winner. In junior high girls, Heidi Schmitz in first led the Willmar team to first. The Willmar junior-high boys took third.
