Prep cross country: Willmar’s Hanson, Yusuf win at Moorhead

MOORHEAD — Willmar had senior Samantha Hanson and junior Nadir Yusuf win individual races and its girls team placed first in the team standings Monday at the Shocky Strand Invitational at MB Johnson Park.

Hanson’s time of 15:00.3 was four seconds faster than teammate and runner-up Kayla Rudie. Sophie Schmitz placed fourth, Jessa Hanson seventh and Serena Monson eighth as the Cardinals’ top five finishes totaled just 22 points.

Yusuf won the boys race by just under a second and Ian Thompson came in fourth to give Willmar two finishers in the top five. But champion Bemidji and runner-up Moorhead had a combined seven runners in the top nine, bumping Willmar to third place.
