Prep Football: Morris thwarts BOLD for first time in 15 years

MORRIS -- The BOLD curse has lifted.

Morris' defense stuffed the Warriors Friday and Eric Riley recorded a combined 195 yards from scrimmage, taking their West Central South Conference football game, 28-0, the first win over BOLD since 1995.

The Tigers' last win came in the second round of the Section 4B playoffs, 12-6.

The teams didn't play each other often until the Warriors moved into the West Central South in 2005. BOLD had won each of the last five meetings.

The Tigers allowed just 128 yards rushing and 14 yards passing to the Warriors.

On the other side, Morris ran the ball 43 times for 306 yards, plus completed eight passes for 150 yards.

Half of the passing yards came on a 75-yard touchdown from Ryan Beyer to Eric Riley with 2:04 left in the second half. He also rushed for 120 yards and a two-yard touchdown in the first quarter.

Alex Steffel led BOLD with 91 yards rushing.

Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City broke open a close game by erupting for six touchdowns in the second quarter.

Mitch Tauer threw two touchdown passes to Ryan Larson and ran for three more scores in the second quarter to ignite the Falcons' offense.

Erik Whitcomb ran for two other scores and Lee Whitcomb capped the scoring with a short TD run. ACGC ran for 228 yards with Erik Whitcomb leading the way with 96 yards on 15 carries.

The Falcons' defense held the Thunder to 71 total yards of offense and forced five turnovers. Hayden Rouser recovered two fumbles and had an interception.

Brandon Bornhorst's 32-yard field goal in the second quarter turned out to be the difference as the Eagles improved to 2-0.

Bornhorst's kick gave the Eagles (2-0) a 16-6 lead. The Thunder Hawks got back to 16-13 before halftime when Brett Bergeson hooked up with running back Isaac Jasperson on a 14-yard touchdown play.

Colton Vien put Montevideo up 6-0 on a seven-yard pass from Bergeson. Sam Haas snagged a pass from quarterback Blake Hoium to tie it 6-6 in the first qauarter. Hoium's two-yard keeper put the Eagles up 13-6.

The Eagles showed a 320 to 280 edge in yardage. Haas ran for 107 yards.
