Prep football roundup: Lakers upset No. 3 ACGC

Email

GLENWOOD — Minnewaska rode big plays to overcome two special teams breakdowns and defeated Class A’s No. 3-ranked  team Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City 24-22  on Friday in Glenwood.

The Lakers took a 21-7 halftime lead, survived a 15-point ACGC outburst in the third quarter, then picked up key first downs to run more than six minutes off the clock late in the fourth quarter.

“It was crazy at the end,” said Lakers head coach Steve Hill. “But we held on in the final seconds.”

Jack Schultenover scored two first-quarter touchdowns on a 64-yard pass from Austin Ostrander and on an 17-yard run.

Ostrander hooked up with Jayden Beecher for an 18-yard TD in the second quarter.

“We knew had to run into a track meet if we were going do anything,” Hill said.

The Lakers lived on the edge, too, surrendering a touchdown and a safety on bad snaps near their own end zone.

Minnewaska’s Ethan Anderson provided the eventual winning points on a 25-yard field goal in the third.

ACGC’s Maverick Whitcomb and David Kinzler scored third quarter TDs and the safety pulled the Falcons within two points.

But Minnewaska got a key first down run by Ostrander and big catches by Schultenover and Matt Paulson that helped the Lakers run off all but 30 seconds of the game’s final 6:40.

The Lakers play next against Melrose at 7 p.m. Friday in Glenwood.

ACGC travels to play West Central Conference co-leader Paynesville at 7 p.m. game on Friday.

Paynesville 20,

BOLD 18

OLIVIA — Matthew Quade threw 3 touchdown passes to three different receivers for Paynesville Friday as the Bulldogs rallied from a scoreless first half to edge BOLD 20-18 in a key West Central Conference game.

The win keeps Paynesville unbeaten at 3-0, the same record as Sauk Centre. The two are tied for first in the conference after Minnewaska, which lost to BOLD last week, clipped previously unbeaten Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City 24-22 Friday.

Next Friday will see Paynesville hosting ACGC and BOLD traveling to Sauk Centre.

There were three scores in the fourth quarter alone after the Bulldogs and Warriors had a combined three in the first three quarters. Paynesville scored first in the fourth when Brandon Schleper hauled in Quade’s first TD to take a slim 12-10 lead.

BOLD then retook the lead at 18-12 with 1:38 remaining after Brad Wolff scored his second TD on the ground and Lane Stadther completed the 2-point conversion pass to Trevor Nissen. But Paynesville snuck back in front — thanks to a wide-open completion — after Quade found Nicholas Dingmann from 12 yards out and later completed the 2-point conversion with just 30 seconds left in the game.

Quade completed less than half of his passes, but his 15 completions picked up 286 yards, including 114 to Dingmann on 5 completions. Quade’s first scoring strike came in the third quarter to Andrew Topp.

Leading the running game was BOLD’s Ben Steffel as the junior collected 188 yards on 35 carries. Bryce Savage paced the Bulldogs with 91 yards on 11 carries.
