Prep football roundup: Minnewaska sinks Tigers

GLENWOOD — Total yardage was nearly even, both about 240 yards, but the Minnewaska Lakers won 31-14 over Morris/Chokio-Alberta on Friday.

A long interception return set up one Waska touchdown and Jack Schultenover polished off the scoring with an 82-yard kickoff return after Morris closed to 24-14 in the fourth quarter.

Matt Paulson scored on a 39 yard pass play with quarterback Austin Ostrander for a 6-0 Lakers’ lead after one quarter. Ostrander scored twice later on short runs. Morris quarterback Bryce Jergensen threw for one score and ran in from one yard for another.

The Bulldogs’ offense was in fine form on Friday night in a West Central Conference win over the Thunder Hawks.

Paynesville plays at Morris/Chokio-Alberta on Friday while Montevideo plays host to Sauk Centre on Friday.

Melrose 14, Benson 12

Melrose blocked a field goal attempt with two seconds left to squeeze by the Braves on Friday in both teams’ season-opener at St. John’s University.

Benson’s Tanner Mikkelson missed an attempt but Melrose was penalized for roughing the kicker.

A mass of Melrose defenders rushed Mikkelson’s second attempt from 22 yards and got the game-saving block.

 The Braves (0-1) play next at Yellow Medicine East on Friday. Melrose (1-0) travels to Grove City to play ACGC on Friday.

Melrose scored all its points in the first half, with Seth Noll running 14 yards for the first touchdown and Matthew Beste hitting Blake Gerads on an 18-yard scoring pass.

Melrose kept the game close, losing two fumbles inside the Benson 10 yard line.

Benson’s Aaron Ahrndt ran 15 yards for the Braves’ first TD in the second quarter and Ahrndt hit Ryan Hampton on a 25-yard scoring pass in the third quarter. The Braves weren’t able to convert either conversion attempt.

Noll gained 149 of the Dutchmen’s 205 rushing yards.

Ahrndt ran for 51 yards and hit 14 of 23 throws for 148 yards.

David Marr scored on a 4-yard run and Colin Thompson later found the end zone from 5 yards out to account for the Renville County West’s two fourth-quarter scores.

Thompson ran for a team-high 42 yards on 13 carries and was also in on 10 tackles on defense. Hayden Johnson made a team-high 11 tackles for the Jaguars.
