BENSON — Two first-quarter scores gave Montevideo a solid start and two big special play touchdowns sealed the deal in the Thunder Hawks’ 34-13 win over Benson in a West Central Conference game on Friday.

The Thunder Hawks won for the first time in three games and Benson fell to 1-2 overall.

Markus Kranz rushed for 97 yards and 2 TDs, and Bryce Maurice returned a second-quarter fumble 9 yards for a TD that put Montevideo up 18-6 at the half.

Benson pulled close at 18-13 on Aaron Ahrndt’s 10-yard scoring pass to Alex Forsberg in the third quarter, but in the fourth Anthony Quigley picked off a pass and returned it 5 yards for a TD that broke the Braves’ momentum for good.

Kranz scored his second touchdown in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring.

Benson’ Ahrndt ran for 97 yards, passed for 122 and scored the Braves’ other touchdown on a 2-yard run in the second quarter.

Benson plays at Morris/Chokio-Alberta at 7 p.m. Friday while Montevideo plays host to Yellow Medicine East at 7 p.m. Friday.
