Prep Golf: Dawson-Boyd boys, BOLD girls top Class A teams after opening round
BOLD is making quite the impression at its first-ever appearance at the girls state golf tournament. The Warriors, paced by junior Breann Mertens’ seventh-place round of 86, lead the Class A meet by two shots after the first round Tuesday in Becker at Pebble Creek Golf Club.
Not to be outdone, Dawson-Boyd owns a one-shot lead on the same course in the boys tournament. The Blackjacks, who are in their fourth state meet in school history, has sophomore Christian Thoen in a sixth-place tie at 78 and junior Easton Popma tied for 19th at 83.
An 85 from junior Cameron Kemem and an 88 from junior Spenser Erickson round out the top rounds for Dawson-Boyd, which placed third two years ago.
The Class A girls field has the highest scores amongst the three classes, but BOLD’s top four scores are only nine shots apart. Following Mertens is sophomore Lanie Altmann (90), senior Liza Reinert (94) and junior Ashley Schmitz (95).
The Minnewaska girls, who won five state titles from 2006-10, are likely too far out to win another championship. The Lakers shot a 341 in Jordan at Ridges at Sand Creek to end the first round of the Class AA meet in fourth, 48 shots behind two-time defending champion Detroit Lakes. Minnewaska junior Jenna Janu is in 10th after carding a 77, while Detroit Lakes has five golfers in the top 10, paced by Sydney Busker’s first-place score of 72.
Also in Jordan on the boys side, Litchfield junior Josh Polingo is in good position to improve on his eighth-place tie last year. Polingo is in a six-way tie for fourth at 72, only three shots off the pace set by Austin vanSytzama Delano. Polingo will tee off at 1:21 p.m. today.
Willmar seniors Hunter Mottinger and Tony Kallevig shot a 77 and 83, respectively, at the Class AAA boys meet at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids.
The second and final round today starts at 7:30 a.m. for the girls and noon for the boys. The BOLD girls start teeing off at 8:15 a.m. with freshman Whitney Trongard. Fellow freshman Madison VanDerHagen follows at 8:24 a.m., Schmitz at 8:33 a.m., Reinert at 8:42, Altmann at 8:51 a.m. and Mertens at 9 a.m. Janu also tees off at 9 a.m. in her quest to improve on last year’s fifth-place tie.
Leading things off for the Dawson-Boyd boys today will be junior Dalton Palmer at 12:45 p.m. Senior Jared Monson starts his second round at 12:54 p.m. with Erickson beginning play at 1:03 p.m., Kemem at 1:12 p.m., Popma at 1:21 p.m. and Thoen at 1:30 p.m.
