Tribune Staff Report

LITCHFIELD -- Freshman Peter Jones fired a 37-35 two-over 72 leading Owatonna to first-place after Day 1 of the Willmar/Litchfield Boys Golf Invitational.

The Huskies' 304 score leads second-place Litchfield by six. Becker is another nine strokes back in third place.

Montevideo, Willmar, New London-Spicer and Benson are each a stroke apart starting with the Thunder Hawks at 324.

Josh Polingo, a sophomore, leads the Dragons with a 76; Phillip Ward of Montevideo is also in at 76. The Thunder Hawks are new to this annual event (canceled by weather last April) and it was Ward's first tour of the Litchfield Golf Club.

Conditions were outstanding considering the wild weather that usually grips one or both days of the event, which continues at 9 a.m. in Willmar at Eagle Creek GC today. Last year's scrub of both rounds was a first.

Hunter Schneider was the only Willmar Cardinal to shoot under 80 on the par 70 layout, which was very good shape after the mild winter. Schneider had 9s of 38 and 40.

Reid Johnson leads the NLS Wildcats with a 37-40-77; Joey Dreier, the 2010 runner-up as a freshman, had a tough front (44) and ended up at 82.

Sam Peterson, Benson's No. 1, was also displeased with his opening 79, matched by his teammate Zach Mauer.

Also for Litchfield, Michael Waataja shot 77, Cameron Sundmark 78 and Zach Whitchurch and Bryce Manning each 79.

The Huskies top four all broke 80: Jones 72, Johan Fraudsen 76, Tyler Jenkins 77 and Ted Urch 79.
