Prep gymnastics: Cards fall to Sauk Rapids

SAUK RAPIDS — Stephanie Thompson won the beam and finished third in all-around for Willmar, but the Cardinals fell 136.05-134.95 to Central Lakes Conference rival Sauk Rapids on the road Thursday.
The Cardinals also had Haley Mottinger win the vault, but the Storm’s depth was too much for Willmar to overcome.
“(134.95) is good for a first meet,” said Willmar coach Larry Selchow. “We’re off to a really good start compared to last year. The kids are in better shape.”
Finishing in the top three for Willmar was Madison Lindblad in second on the beam, Johnson tied for second on the floor, Thompson tied for third on the vault and Mottinger tied for third on the beam.
The Cardinals resume action next Thursday when they host Sartell in another CLC dual.
