Prep gymnastics: Cards' Johnson 17th in state vault

MINNEAPOLIS -- Two Willmar gymnasts finished among the top 30 in their events at the State Gymnastics Class A meet on Saturday at the University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion.

In the vault, Cardinals junior Cassie Johnson placed 17th with a score of 9.300 by achieving excellent height wither her somersault off the table.

Jessica Stelter of Detroit Lakes won the event with 9.725 and Mikayla Dockendorf of Sartell was second with 9.587.

In the balance beam, Willmar ninth-grader Stephanie Thompson placed 26th at 8.425; she completed a back handpring to a somersault but fell on her second back somi. Melrose's Hailey Brinkman placed first with 9.637 and Sarah Hoffman of New Prague was second with 9.500.

Brinkman also won bars (9.7), floor (9.65) and all-around (38.15).

The Dutchmen won the Class A team championship for the first time since 1995 with a score of 147.5 on Friday. New Prague was second with 145.425.
