Prep gymnastics roundup: Willmar catches some of the Melrose magic

MELROSE — The Willmar Cardinals scored a season-best 140.325 on the floor of the defending Class A champions in gymnastics on Tuesday.

Melrose took the first five spots in all-around with first-place Jailyn Brinkman posting a 38.275. The Dutch final score was a jaw-dropping 149.05.

A version of the Killer Bs dominated every event. Lydia Butkowski won vault (9.5) and beam (9.7), and Jailyn Brinkman bars (9.650) and floor (9.7). Mady Brinkman finished third in two events and all-around.

Willmar coach Larry Selchow pointed out that the Cardinals excelled in vault and floor.

“Hillary Weiler had a great vault, a season-best (9.05) to get us going and Maddie Lindblad also had her best (9.250),” he said. “We rocked on floor. The judge, who had seen us earlier, said the team looked ‘much improved.’ ’’

Cassie Johnson finished third in vault (9.35) and Hailey Mottinger third on floor (9.475). Stephanie Thompson scored 35.1 all-around.

Mya Rohman won two events and placed first all-around to lead New London-Spicer to the victory on Tuesday night in Paynesville.

Rohman won the bars with a 7.75 and the floor exercise with an 8.7. She scored 31.85 all-around.

NLS’ Arica Clancy won the vault with a 9.0 and she also placed second in the floor with an 8.35. The Wildcats’ Haley Stahl placed first on the beam with an 8.4.

Paynesville’s Heather Arnold was second all-around with a 30.85 and teammate Abby Hopfer was third all-around with a 28.4.

New London-Spicer gets 10 days off before returning to action at home against Glencoe-Silver Lake on Feb. 8.
