It's nearly kickoff time for the 2009 football season among the 20 area teams in our coverage area. There are four games involving five of our teams on tap for today and the remaining teams open on Friday.

The only game tonight involving two area teams is Dawson-Boyd at Renville County West. Dawson-Boyd has one of the most experienced teams back with seven starters on offense and nine on defense back from a successful 7-3 season.

Defending Class A state champion Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg is hosting Pillager, Litchfield is hosting Watertown-Mayer and MACCRAY is at Tracy-Milroy-Balaton in other games tonight. KMS returns senior running back Joel Bauman, the area rushing leader the past two seasons. The All-State back also shattered the area single-season rushing mark with 2,941 yards last season.

Willmar hosts Bemidji in a non-conference game Friday night at Hodapp Field. It marks the first game for new head coach Jon Konold, an offensive coordinator for defending state champion Mankato West last season.

Two other teams in the area have new head coaches; Max Meagher at Paynesville and Dave Vik at Montevideo. Both were assistants at their respective schools last season.

All 20 of our teams are previewed in our Pigskin Preview supplement in today's paper.

Volleyball previews

Twenty of the 21 area volleyball teams will be previewed in Tuesday's paper (Willmar's preview was already published). Some of the teams have already opened the season, then have a few days off over Labor Day.

New London-Spicer and Willmar appear to be the top two teams in the area this season. NLS returns five starters from a 23-7 team. Willmar opened with an impressive win over Minnetonka on Tuesday night.

There are nine matches scheduled for tonight, including Willmar at Sartell and NLS at Dassel-Cokato.

Fragodt on roll

Abby Fragodt, a senior and No. 1 singles player on the Benson/KMS tennis team, recently broke the school record for career wins, currently sitting at an impressive record of 148-17, including 99-4 at singles.

Fragodt is also the Benson girls basketball career leader in points (1,138) and rebounds (1,010).

And she had played in two state golf meets.
