Prep Softball: Early surge triggers Paynesville to win over Yellow Medicine East

GRANITE FALLS -- The Paynesville Bulldogs socked eight of their 12 hits in the first two innings when they scored all their runs in a 9-1 victory over Yellow Medicine East in West Central South softball on Tuesday.

Jessica Klein's three-run homer highlighted a four-run first inning. Kenzie Meagher had RBI hits, one a triple, in both the first and second.

Whitney Woehler tamed the Sting bats on five hits while waking one and whiffing five.

Kayla Lieser also had two safeties for Paynesville (4-0, 5-0).

Ashley Magnuson, the losing pitcher, and Lauren Trudel each doubled for YME (1-4, 4-4).

Benson's Hancock's Taylor Semler took a perfect game into the fourth inning before finishing with a two-hitter. She struck out 13 and didn't issue a walk.

Montevideo (0-4, 2-5) didn't have a runner reach second base the entire game. Kayla Berget's fourth-inning single broke up the perfect-game bid.

Emily Rajewsky had two hits and drove in four runs to lead Benson/Hancock (4-2, 4-2). Datriana Jensen collected two hits, including a triple, and an RBI.

Mary Larson hit a single to left field to score the winning run for Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Larson was 3-for-4 on the day with two doubles and two RBI for the Falcons.

Karley Weir of Lac qui Parle Valley was a home run short of bhitting for the cycle during a 4-for-4 performance with a double, a triple, three runs and two runs driven in. Whitley Strei and Ellissa Schmidt had two htis each.
